Over the past few years, food inflation has made food insecurity worse and put a healthy diet out of reach for too many people in BC.
This is a serious problem. We need political leaders to take action!
Nutritious food protects us against disease - including heart disease, type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure and cancer, among others.
Leading experts say that food insecurity is primarily an income issue but eating healthy also requires access to affordable vegetables and fruit, food literacy and cooking skills.
We ask the provincial government to:
- Establish a universal Healthy School Food Program for all public schools
- Expand food programs that teach cooking skills to promote healthy eating
- Provide grants so that remote areas of BC can get affordable healthy foods
- Make sure Income and Disability Assistance rates keep up with inflation so people can afford healthy basics
- Support community groups that distribute food as an important short-term means to address food insecurity for equity-seeking groups
- Listen to recommendations from Indigenous communities on policies and resources that will support them
